The laneway alongside the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre has been brought to life with a colourful mural thanks to local students attending an Arts Summer School.

Inspired by Bundaberg’s hidden beauty, the artwork has drawn on architectural elements and colours from around the CBD.

Seven students from Bundaberg State High School, Kepnock State High School, St Luke’s and Shalom participated in a three-day workshop and created their own arts community.

Student Charlie Aslett said the best part of the laneway mural workshop was finding inspiration.

Students named the laneway mural “Paper Town”.

“I liked the first day when we got to look around Bundaberg to find inspiration and trying to incorporate that into the mural,” she said.

Charlie was registered into the workshop as a Christmas gift from her mum.

“She knew it would be something I would really love, and she was right.

“I already loved painting, but this has inspired me to try a bunch of different things with my art.”

Bailey McGuire participated in the workshop while on holidays from Western Australia.

“It was an opportunity to do something different on my holiday,” she said.

“We have all become friends, we all made nicknames for each other.”

The laneway mural workshop was run by Queensland College of Art teacher, Simon De Groot and wrapped up today after three days of planning and painting.

Simon said the workshop was a success.

“The mural has come together really well, especially considering the age of the students,” he said.

“Everyone has learnt different ways to make artwork.”

“It has been great.”

The workshop is a part of Bundaberg Regional Council’s Arts Summer School program. More information on the program can be found here.

The project has been made possible with the support of the State Government through Arts Queensland, the Regional Arts Services Network and the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).
